This wonderful and rare early 19th century ring is crafted in high karat gold and features a rustic foiled rose-cut diamond in a closed-back cup. The delicate silvery glitter of the stone is an elegant compliment to the deeply yellow color of the metal, which acid tests between 18k-20k gold. An interesting sunray effect is created around the rub-over collet setting by the multi-prong basket holding it aloft, and the gracefully sculpted shoulders have a sleek graphic quality that makes this easy to stack with rings from a variety of eras. I love the mix of rustic antique charm with a surprisingly modern aesthetic. Measuring approximately 5/16" north to south at the face, the band tapers through it's angular form to a 1.16 mm width at the center back of the band. Currently size 4 1/4 and resizable about two full sizes. Please convo me before purchase if you are interested in the details of our sizing service. Backing gemstones with foils was common practice in the Georgian period of the 18th and early 19th century as a way to enhance the reflective qualities and color of a jewel. The settings would be individually crafted to exactly fit the stone, and closed back to emphasize the effect of the foiling. It's important to note that rings with foil backed stones should never be immersed in water: remove before showering, dish washing, water skiing, etc. Moisture could get behind the stone and cause the metal foil to oxidize and darken. An accidental splash shouldn't be a problem but you don't want to submerge the ring for any period of time. Please keep this in mind if considering a foiled stone engagement ring; expectations should be tairlored to lifestyle with any ring, but especially antique pieces. In excellent antique condition. There is a thin line at the center back of the band, evidence of an antique resizing and some slight irregularity to the edge of the bezel or collet. Light wear to the details, natural after approximately two hundred years on the planet and the relative softness of high karat gold, but the mounting is strong and wearable. Upon examination with a jeweler's loupe it appears there may have been a repair to a couple of the prongs, but this does not face up when worn. Not marked for gold content but acid tests better than 18k and is possibly 20k, a commonly used alloy of the time. ❃ The Eden Collective Ring Shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheEdenCollective?section_id=13939721&ref=shopsection_leftnav_1 ❃ We are happy to offer layaway.
