Circa 1910, a regal antique sterling silver signet ring with deeply carved shoulders in a highly detailed floral scroll motif. The elaborate pattern includes a budding acanthus flower and leaf which would add a sentimental touch to any initials engraved on the face. Currently blank it's a size that could accommodate up to three or possibly four letters, and might make an exceptional alternative wedding ring with a mongram design incorporating both partner's initials. Please convo me before purchase oif you are interested in the details of our engraving service. Measuring 5/8" north to south and approximately 9/16" east to west the face is raised above the finger about 3/16". The ornately chased pattern fills the shoulders completely, extending down the sides of the shank, tapering through to a 4.39 mm wide plain band by the center back. Currently size 12 and resizable about three full sizes without issue. Please convo me before purchase if you are interested in our sizing service. In excellent condition. The surface has a slight antique patina speaking to it's age and history but the details are incredibly crisp and well defined. Not marked for silver content but acid tests to sterling. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Signet or seal rings were first used in ancient Egypt before the use of a personal written signature was developed and people needed to make proprietary marks on objects. The carved image left an impression when pressed into a piece of clay which could then be affixed to the item and ownership made known. Farther north Roman warriors wore iron signet rings to celebrate their victories, Roman nobles had them fashioned of gold and carved gemstones to advertise their wealth and status. Throughout European history the ruling classes have worn them to indicate their power by means of an engraved family crest or coat of arms and motto. In that type of seal signet the image was mirror reversed so that the impression made in wax would be legible. This was essentially an early form of notarization and rendered the document sealed as legal and binding. The tradition grew to include right sided or pseudo signet rings of souvenir status not meant to be used as a legal tool but to indicate the college one attended or the society to which one pledged. The monogramed signet ring appeared in the 18th century and it became the fashion to develop one's personal monogram and then have a ring made to accommodate it. Because of their history signet rings have always carried an air of status. Few adornments have an attitude as rich.
