A wonderfully detailed antique locket circa 1895, crafted in yellow gold-filled with a rich warm patina featuring a spray of daisies embossed on the front cover and the mongram "V.M.R." engraved on the back. The flowers are set with either bright-blue glass turquoise cabochons or diamond paste stones that have slightly oxidized and glitter like rose-cut diamonds with a lush smoky sparkle.
Measuring approximately 1 1/8" in diameter, not including the bail and hung from a fine 22" antique gold-filled curb chain. The locket opens and closes firmly, with space inside for two photos, one side retains the original photo frame and the other has a lip to hold a photo in place.
The daisy is a flower with a rich history of symbolic meaning, one traditional reference is to purity and the innocence of a first love. In Norse mythology, the daisy is Freya's sacred flower; Freya is the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility, and so the daisy came to symbolize childbirth, motherhood, and new beginnings.
In excellent overall condition with a gentle antique patina speaking to its dignified age, some slight oxidization of the paste stones and inside compartment and subtle wear to the locket plating. The locket has a "bloomed" finish, which was a technique used to create a velvety smooth matte glow on the surface of gold jewelry.
