A gem-studded antique Victorian dragon pendant circa 1895 crafted in 14k yellow gold. Beautifully detailed with rich texture the mythical beast is coiled around twin old mine-cut diamonds, fiery and bright, while a raspberry-red ruby glitters at the tip of his tail. Originally a stickpin, we converted this with a sturdy 14k bail to give it new life in the new millennium. Measuring approximately 1" long including the bail and 9/16" east to west. Hung from a fine antique 16 7/8" 14k cable chain. Dragons have fascinated us since the ancient Sumerians first put reed to clay tablet in an effort to relate the story of the beginning of man; symbolically, among other things, they represent a mastery of all the elements of nature. One of the root meanings of the word translates from the Greek as "I see clearly" and this, coupled with other traditional attributes of wisdom and strength, illustrates the dragon metaphor as referring to one who sees the big picture and knows how to handle what life throws his or her way. The gemstones are appropriately chosen; according to ancient gemstone lore the ruby is considered an especially powerful protection stone, with the ability to darken in color if it's wearer is in danger. Diamonds have always been associated with fidelity, constancy, power and strength. During the Middle Ages, it was believed that a diamond would grow darker in the face of guilt, and would shine most brightly for the innocent and pure of heart. In excellent condition, marked for 14k on the back. ❃ More Necklaces and Pendants: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheEdenCollective?section_id=13939717&ref=shopsection_leftnav_3 ❃ We are happy to offer layaway.
